Choosing a Pediatric Crown Starter Kit: What to Look For
What to look for in a pediatric zirconia or stainless steel crown starter kit: size coverage, fit profiles, try-in crowns, storage, labeling and refills.

A starter kit is the inventory decision you live with every day. When it is right, the crown you need is in the drawer, labeled and ready. When it is wrong, you are rescheduling a child because the one size you need is missing. This guide covers what to look for before you commit, whether you are adding zirconia for the first time or restocking stainless steel.
Start with your case mix
Before comparing kits, look at what you actually place. Pull a few months of procedure codes, or simply ask the team, and answer three questions:
- How many anterior crowns do you place compared with posterior crowns?
- Of your posterior crowns, how many are zirconia and how many are stainless steel?
- Which tooth positions and sizes come up most often?
A practice that treats a lot of early childhood caries on upper incisors needs a deep anterior zirconia assortment. A practice that mostly restores primary molars may be better served by a posterior zirconia kit alongside a full stainless steel assortment. Buying the kit that matches your volume keeps money out of crowns that sit unused.
Size coverage for every position you treat
The first test of any kit is whether it covers the positions and sizes you reach for. Primary teeth vary a lot in size, and a kit that skips the ends of the range will leave you short on the smallest and largest patients.
| Crown line | KTR positions | Sizes per position |
|---|---|---|
| Zirconia incisors | Upper centrals and laterals, plus universal lower incisors | 1 to 6 |
| Zirconia cuspids | Upper and lower, left and right | 1 to 6 |
| Zirconia molars | First and second primary molars, all four quadrants | 2 to 7 |
| Stainless steel molars | A, B, I, J, K, L, S and T | 2 to 7 (48 sizes in total) |
The crown sizing guide lays out every position and size in one chart. It is worth checking your kit against it so you know which sizes you will order individually as needed. For steel crowns specifically, the stainless steel crown size chart cross-references Universal, Palmer and KTR codes.
Pay attention to where your patients fall in the range, too. If you treat a lot of very young children, the smaller sizes will turn over fastest; a practice with many older children and later-stage lesions on second molars will go through the larger molar sizes. Keeping two of your most-used sizes, rather than one, means a try-in that fails does not leave the slot empty for the next patient.
Fit profiles and try-in crowns for zirconia
Zirconia cannot be crimped or trimmed chairside, so the kit has to do more of the work. Two features matter most.
- Fit profiles. Primary teeth are not all proportioned the same way. KTR zirconia crowns come in Standard, Slim (1 mm narrower mesial-distal) and Mini (1 mm shorter occlusal-cervical) profiles, so you can match a narrow space or a short tooth without extra reduction. Our zirconia crown sizing guide explains when to use each.
- Try-in crowns. Colored, autoclavable try-in crowns let you check the size and seat before you open the final crown. That keeps your final crowns untouched until you know which one you need.

Pre-crimped stainless steel saves chair time
For stainless steel, look for crowns that arrive ready to place. Pre-trimmed, belled and crimped margins mean most crowns snap on with little or no adjustment, which matters when your patient's patience is measured in minutes. KTR stainless steel crowns are made from 300-series (Type 304) nickel-chromium stainless steel and supplied pre-trimmed, belled and crimped, with an anatomical occlusal form. Keep a pair of crimping pliers on hand for the cases that still need a closer margin.
Storage and labeling you can find in a hurry
A kit is only as useful as your assistant's ability to find the right crown quickly. Look for:
- A labeled case with a compartment for each position and size, and a lid that stays closed when the case is moved.
- Markings on the crown itself. Every KTR crown is laser-etched, and stainless steel crowns carry both Universal and Palmer notation, so a crown that has left its compartment can still be identified at a glance.
- Autoclave compatibility. All KTR crowns are autoclave safe, so a crown that was tried in and not used can be sterilized and returned to stock.
Refills: the part of the kit you pay for later
Whatever kit you buy, the sizes you use most will run out first. How you restock matters as much as the initial purchase.
- Can you reorder a single crown by tooth, size and fit, or do you have to buy a whole box?
- Is there a minimum order?
- How quickly do orders ship?
KTR sells zirconia refills individually by position, size and fit profile, with no minimum order, and stainless steel crowns in boxes by size. Orders placed before the daily cutoff ship the same business day, so a missing size is a short-term problem rather than a canceled appointment.
It also helps to assign ownership. Most practices that never run out of the size they need have one assistant who checks the case at the end of each week, notes the empty slots and places a single refill order. A laminated list of your most-used positions and sizes taped inside the cabinet door makes that check a two-minute job, and it turns the kit into a system rather than a box that slowly empties.
What KTR kits include
For reference, the KTR zirconia Anteriors and Posteriors Starter Kits each hold 96 Standard-Fit crowns across every position in their range, in a labeled storage case with a slide lock and a sizing reference card. A smaller Universal Lower Incisors Kit covers the lower anteriors. On the stainless steel side, there is a starter kit of popular sizes and a 48 Box Refill Set covering a full range of sizes. Details are on the zirconia and stainless steel shop pages.

Try before you commit
A kit is a significant purchase, and fit and finish are easier to judge in your hand than on a product page. Ask for samples, seat a few on typodont teeth or in a real case, and see how the crown sizes line up with the teeth you treat. KTR offers free samples of both zirconia and stainless steel crowns to dental professionals for exactly this reason.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy an anterior or posterior zirconia kit first?
Buy the one that matches your case mix. If most of your zirconia crowns are on upper incisors, start with an anterior kit. If you mainly restore primary molars in zirconia, start with a posterior kit and order anterior crowns individually as needed.
Can I reuse a zirconia crown that was tried in but not cemented?
All KTR crowns are autoclave safe, so a crown that was tried in and not used can be sterilized and returned to stock. Using colored try-in crowns for sizing avoids the question entirely.
Is there a minimum order for KTR crown refills?
No. You can order a single zirconia crown by tooth, size and fit profile. See the FAQ for ordering and shipping details.
What fit profile do KTR starter kits use?
The zirconia Anteriors and Posteriors Starter Kits contain Standard-Fit crowns. Slim and Mini crowns can be ordered individually as refills for the cases that need them.
